Let's do a Treat!

Treat: Talk about a game that we would like to buy/read/play.

This time I want to talk about a game I've read but not got around to playing yet: Outliers by Samantha Leigh. Outliers is a solo TTRPG that asks the question "what does normal scientific research look like, anyway?". In it, you take on the esteemed position of a research assistant in a totally normal study. I think the Abstract of the book sets the tone well:

You didn't think anything of the job listing at the time. Sure, it was odd that a research assistant position should list "baking shortbread" and "humming in D minor" as desired skills. You couldn't have known, though: this is the first place you applied to after graduation. Maybe all research assistant jobs are like this. They're not.

The game is full of anomalies, clones, cryptids and strange rituals and I cannot wait to play it. Your aim is to get further funding for the study while deviating as little as possible from procedure - too much going awry leads to the study being shut down. It uses the Wretched and Alone framework, with playing cards, dice, and a Jenga tower to bring your incredibly-ordinary-and-in-no-way-anomalous study to life.

With Emmrich's romance which version do u prefer lich or not? And why?

Oh this is a hard one for me, I am very torn on which path I prefer.

Allow me to explain why I am torn -

Lich Path

This path holds a place in my heart. On one hand, Emmrich has achieived his dreams of lichdom and averted his fear of death. We love an ambitious king who remains irrevocably in love. But he has not faced his fear, he averted it. Emmrich's fear of death most likely stems from his parents and with being apart of the Watchers since he was a child - similar to Rook Ingellvar. If Emmrich takes up lichdom, his fear of death does not dissapear, it transfers to Rook.

Whilst both mortal and lich Emmrich fear Rook's death quite heavily, when Emmrich is a lich, this fear is based around Rook's death and Emmrichs inevitable grief that will follow for eternity. I am of the mind where I believe that Emmrich would 'go rogue' if Rook were to pass on. Purely because of the type of love they share, Emmrich's past, and that he would not be able to cope with the loss of the flame of his heart. The most magnificant thing to ever happen to him.

In saying that, when Emmrich takes up lichdom, Rook states that Emmrich has everything he needs to tackle Lichdom. (i.e., you can accept the death of others, including Rook). Incredibly wrong, so incredibly wrong as seen throughout the rest of the romance following. A) His argument with Rook about death and living without them for eternity (man would go rogue due to who he is as a person), B) He is found by Davrin crying in his room, alone, after the death of Manfred. C) Throughout the banter in the game, Emmrich avoids and/or is cold to the topic of Manfred's death. Dismissing and avoiding any claim that he misses him.

Emmrich is not equipped to take up lichdom because he feels so deeply, and loves so deeply. So fucking deeply. He borderlines being an empath with OCPD if you wanna get literal. His obsessions and compulsions being death, affection, and magic.

Whilst I believe that both paths embody the soulmate trope, I adore this path because it transcends reality and they would, Emmrich would, find Rook in each world. Through any means neccessary. Yes - Emmrich is about rules and order, and is gentle and kind, but this man (now lich lord) is a powerful mage. A very powerful mage who can speak to the dead. There are hints throughout his romance that he would go unhinged should his weakness (Rook) be exploited (aka, dead). Read about and see more below -

Mortal Path

I am yet to dissect the mortal argument & romance scene, however they will be coming shortly, but for now I will expand my thoughts here. You can find the intial romance dissection here .

Mortal Emmrich path is incredibly wholesome and fullfilling. Emmrich gives up his dream for his love for Manfred. Whilst this is heartwarming to others, it does not tick my boxes personally. I wouldve preferred Emmrich consideration of mortality to be a mixture of Rook and Manfred. In saying that though, Emmrich's lichdom path has a significant amount of more romance-esque dialogue. Particularly in the romance and lichdom decision scenes. So it's an odd choice for the developers, or an oversight. I think I am turned off by it a tad because there is minimal fear towards Rook's death. Whereas Lich Emmrich is devastatingly scared. Idk, I'm in two minds.

I really do love the mortal path as I believe it adds more depth to Emmrich, it adds a layer of resilence instead of avoidance. Thinking of the romance scenes, the mortal scene is about love and wanting eachother, whereas the lich path is about desire and acceptance. Both are remarkable. God this is hard.

Emmrich's fear of death does extend to Rook during the argument scene and this is evident throughout the rest of the game and romance. Stating that he is afraid he will die and be a burden to Rook. These romance argument scenes are flipped in retrospect - In the mortal scene, Emmrich fears his own death will hurt Rook, and is terrified of that because he loves her so much. In the lich scene, Emmrich is terrified of Rook's death and the pain it will cause him because he loves her so much. My one grivenance with this scene is that Emmrich can say, "At your age?" in a condescending tone which I think it very out of character. But aso backs up my point that he has a fire to him.

However, the mortal romance has a significant amount of benefit to it. A) Emmrich somewhat learns to deal with his mortality, B) He has Manfred, C) They can spend their post-game days enjoying their life together, instead of the fear that will forever creep on Lich Emmrich.

I implore you to also remeber that it is evident that mortal path Emmrich believes that he is 'too old' to enjoy this type of love. He never thought it would come to fruition. This is evident by the banter, dialogue, and flirt options throughout the game. "its gratifying a fresh faced adventurer noticed me at all" and more. Hence his fear and feelings of burden towards Rook being evident in the argument scene.

Additionally, Emmrich grew up poor. This would impact his view on society and love. But more impactfully, it would impact his view on himself. His self-worth. Emmrich likely thinks he doesnt deserve this type of love. Hence the attempt to push Rook away and act over-suave at times. I'll break this down more later.

Give The Eternal Flame a read.

At the end of the day, Rook was right. Things would be easier to deal with if Manfred were around.

Verdict

I really, really, really love both and Im really torn between them because they are both fantastic and have individual meaning whilst remaining true to the concept that Emmrich and MW Rook are made for eachother. Soulmates. It honestly pains me to say, but at this point in time - I think at the end of the day, as much as I love the Lich romance, and the more content it posesses. Like, love love love the lich romance. Unless there was a canon way in the future for Rook to join him in Lichdom, I prefer the mortal romance path.

This is due to 3 reasons -

A) Whilst the romance content in game is better for his Lich romance and appeals more to my favourute tropes, becoming a lich lord is not something Emmrich is equipped for. He would need a romanced Rook to join him to be 'fine', if that. Inevitably, Lichdom is his way to avert his fears, not face them.

B) Mages can live for an incredibly long time. Especially ones that are entwined with the Fade. Even more so ones that can speak to the dead. I think there is some meaning for that we will uncover in future game adaptions.

C) Emmrich states that he is happier with Rook and Manfred and would not give it up for anything. Whilst both romance scenes are incredibly powerful and romantic, the mortal romance scene is a masterpiece with facial expressions and tension. You can feel the love. Whilst you can feel the love in the Lich romance scene, it is centered around acceptance. See below.

At the end of the day it comes back to the question of what would Emmrich's parents want for him? The question that confirms his romance. They would want him to be happy, with someone who cares for him. That person being Rook. Emmrich would be happy for the rest of his life. Emmrich has yearned for this love his entire life. Lich Emmrich would be happy, for a time. Then descend into madness, leaving him unhappy and distraught.

More general thoughts:

Idia and Malleus are quite the pair to be dating

Once the students around the school are able to confirm it’s true that you are, in fact, dating both of them, news spreads quickly

Malleus doesn’t care so much about the news, why shouldn’t people know you’re together?

Idia however, is very overwhelmed by it all

Regardless of how long you’ve been dating, he still sometimes has these moments of thinking “How did I get here? Did I upgrade my charisma stats without knowing? Was it the charisma stat that made them fall, or was it a different stat?”

And as someone who prefers to stay in the background and avoid the public eye, the fact that everyone at school knows you’re dating him and Malleus causes a lot of panic

We’re talking like barely leave his room even just into Ignihyde kinda panic

It takes a while for him to calm down, and he gets spooked when people bring it up thinking they’re comparing him to Malleus

He might subtly be inviting you to his room more often because he needs the support without saying he needs he support

Speaking of support, let’s talk about how they want support/show support

Now these two are more reserved people, and tend to keep a lot of their thoughts inside and tend to stray away from large crowds. That being said, they simply enjoy your presence being in the same area as them, double the effect if both you and the other are there

Malleus enjoys having you and Idia there, and Idia enjoys having you and Malleus there (regardless of how out of place Malleus looks in his room)

Idia prefers doing his own thing while you guys do your own thing in the same area, while Malleus prefers doing activities together

But oh boy, these two feel most supported if you listen to them

I hope you’re a good listener, because wow these two can go on for hours if you let them

Idia and Malleus both love when people they care about get interested in the things they love, and get even more excited when they ask questions

They aren’t too physically affectionate people though

Idia gets nervous and panics at small unexpected touches, and Malleus keeps touches light and respectful

Most of the times it’s hand holding, a hand on your lower back as you walk, and maybe a hug if they’re feeling it

They coordinate surprisingly well when it comes to special events like your birthday, holidays, or school festivals

Instead of spending time one on one with them, they both are there for you during events

Idia likes it because people tend to steer clear of Malleus and there's guards keeping things out of his way, so Idia doesn't have to worry as much about dealing with people (the only unfortunate part is dealing with Sebek)

You basically get the royal treatment just by being with them, and that's the way they believe it's supposed to be

They are very mindful of each other during these events too. Malleus is careful about going into largely populated areas, and Idia tries to make sure Malleus is included in activities (in Idia's awkward way)

The dynamic being in a relationship with both of them works pretty well!

And then there's the friends/family

Lilia:

Lilia is actually very happy about this

Briar Valley culture is a bit...reserved and old fashioned, but Lilia is a man who's open to seeing and experiencing new things, so he's happy to see Malleus is too!

Having one partner is great, but two? He's very happy for Malleus

He does worry about how things will work out in the future with Malleus being royalty and having two partners, but that's an issue for later

He's pretty happy it's you and Idia of all people too!

Lilia loves video games, so he helps Malleus learn about them so he can communicate and bond better with Idia, and he's happy because then Malleus can play with him too

He feels like a proud dad watching Malleus with you and Idia

Silver:

Silver hasn't interacted with Idia much, so he can't speak on Idia's character, but he knows you! And he thinks you're good for Malleus, so he has no objections

As long as Malleus is happy, he really doesn't mind however Malleus chooses to have a relationship

He's pretty accepting of almost anything, so he doesn't even question the three of you dating or anything

He does try to get to know Idia more because of this though! Since Silver is the most calm among Malleus' guards, it actually goes pretty well and him and Idia communicate well

Sebek:

What do you expect, really? Of course Sebek is freaking out

His Liege has TWO partners?! What?!

Don't get him wrong, he has nothing against people having multiple partners, to each their own

But this is Malleus! The future ruler of Briar Valley! Sebek is going crazy that Malleus even has one partner and is of course judging them heavily to see if they're good enough for Malleus, but now there's two to judge!

Yeah, Idia avoids Sebek as much as possible

Sebek really doesn't want to question Malleus and his decisions, but he doesn't see the appeal of Idia

Malleus is quick to shut down Sebek's judgement and criticisms once he's aware of them, and Sebek will feel terrible

Ortho:

He's ecstatic!

Ortho has been trying for so long to get Idia out more and among more people, and you and Malleus help him a lot with that and he can tell you both make Idia really happy!

He's very proud of Idia and has no issues with you or Malleus

Sometimes he worries about Idia comparing himself to Malleus, but he's seen you and Malleus reassure him before, and how deeply the two of you care for Idia

Ortho feels like he doesn't have to worry as much about Idia since he has the two of you with him

He knows in his heart that the three of you will last a very long time

In a sport like hockey, you got used to being called a variety of different names for a variety of stupid reasons. 

Some made sense. Some had a funny backstory. Some were born from an embarrassing memory you could never escape. Some had no real correlation but it was used once and it stuck and now the whole team used it. It was just one of the dynamics of hockey that you got used to pretty early on. 

And the thing was that Luke didn’t hate his name. He didn’t, it would have broken his parents heart if he said as much. It just wasn’t exactly like he was ecstatic for people to throw ‘Luke Warren Hughes’ at him. Or at least, he didn’t like it when his middle name was brought into the locker room. 

Maybe it was PTSD from the teasing he got when he was in middle school. Maybe it was the fact it sounded a little like it belonged to a sixty year old man. Or maybe it was because he was so damn used to being known as ‘Luke Hughes’ or ‘the other Hughes’, that he sometimes forgot he had a middle name.

Whatever the reason was, Luke never liked it being used in the locker room by the boys. He didn’t really like the name being used, full stop. Unless it was one of his parents using it. He thought he managed to avoid it for years until he joined the New Jersey Devils and met the team—met you.

Because, for some fucking reason that was beyond his own understanding, every rule and belief Luke had went flying out the window when it came to you. 

Including the use of his middle name.

“God, Warren, couldn’t even use a comb this morning?” 

Luke felt his cheeks heat up as he lifted his head to find you wandering into the locker room. Most of the team were already out on the ice, but Luke was one of the stragglers that was still getting his gear on. It wasn’t his fault the team decided team pictures needed to be taken at an ungodly hour before practice. 

“Does it look that bad?” Luke questioned, trying to ignore the pleasant twist in his stomach when you flashed him a smile and made your way over to him.

“I think it looks cute,” you replied, lip tucked between your teeth as you reached out to gently run your fingers through his curls. “Curtis might give you some shit though.”

“Curtis always gives me shit,” he mumbled, letting his eyes flutter shut as your nails gently scraped along his scalp. 

“Hm, well tell him to come talk to me if he gives you a hard time for your curls,” you said, and even with his eyes closed, he could hear the smile in your voice. 

His cheeks burned as he tilted his head back to look at you, his own smile mirroring yours. “Gonna be my knight in shining armour?” 

“M’always gonna have your back, Warren,” you replied, your voice a little softer. A little more genuine. 

He swallowed. “You’re the only one who gets to call me that, you know.” 

Your smile widened. “Oh, I know. Jack told me you once got into a fight during a game back in middle school after some guy on the other team used it.”

He groaned a little at the memory. “Quinn and Jack gave me so much shit after that. They called me Warren for a week after that.” 

You snorted. “What did you do?”

“I told on them,” he admitted, a little sheepish. “They got grounded for a week.” 

You laughed and his smile widened at the sound.

“So how come you let me use it?” You asked, something else in your voice that Luke couldn’t quite name but it still made his heart speed up a little.

“I guess I like you more than them.” It was meant to come out light-hearted and teasing, but it felt far too heavy and suggestive once the words left his mouth.

“Enough to grab something to eat after practice?” You asked, so casual and calm like you couldn’t see the way Luke’s whole face was burning a pretty shade of red. 

“More than enough,” he said with a nod, unable to fight the grin off his face when you smiled back.

“Then better get your pretty ass out there before the boys make you do drills after practice for being late,” you teased, laughing as you watched him quickly shove on the rest of his gear before rushing out the door.

Royal Treatment

Summary: You and your friends need to blow off some steam and you make a new friend who's more than he appears.

Part of the Royal Vows AU.

You grip the letter like your life depends on it. Reading it practically tore your heart out. Years of work, months of preparing your presentation for the King and his advisors, and all for nothing. The preserve would be torn down to make room for more hotels and tourist attractions. Never mind the ecological impact. Never mind that botanists had found potential new medicines. Nope. "Where's the profit" was the name of the game and you couldn't offer anything more substantial than potential profits.

Thankfully your friend group knew that, win or lose, you were going to need to let off some steam. They were hoping it would be getting to enjoy the very tourism industry you were fighting against because you'd gotten a small victory, but now it was just the only way to safely and legally let off steam. The four of you pooled your money together and managed to reserve a room at The King's Rest, the biggest hotel and casino in the kingdom. All you could get was a room with a single king-size bed for an entire weekend. Sure, it'd be cramped and definitely no bringing guys to the room, but it would still be a lot of fun.

You've set up two budgets for yourself: one for food, drink and trinkets, the other for gambling. Once that gambling budget is gone, it's gone. You can move money from the gambling budget to the other one, but not the other way around. If you're lucky, and you're not feeling particularly lucky, you'll walk away with more money than you started. But it's always good to have rules and limits to avoid the heavy debts you can get into.

Candace had scored tickets for a show at the VIP level of the casino. It's not a show you'd seek out on your own but, screw it. You're all going to dress up in your finest and go just because you can. You've got one flashy outfit and accessories and you're going to let yourself feel gorgeous, even if the teal does stand out.

Ari never cared for visiting Lloyd Hansen's kingdom of Rumica. The Hansen line of kings had long built up the reputation of their kingdom being the best place to visit. Not live, though. Hansen has noticed an increase in his people moving to Ari's home of Bellin and was pitching a fit that could lead to trouble for everyone.

Rumica was, on paper, the richest kingdom. People from all over the world would visit just to spend way too much money for the sake of a vacation. The common people getting to live like kings and queens, including dropping money as if they had plenty.

But the kingdom's infrastructure was lacking. It's citizens continuously lost housing and land to "development". The only way to make a living was by serving the tourist. And even then, "a living" was barely enough to support their families.

The kingdom was tourism machine that was never satisfied and Ari hated every second he had to spend here.

So, of course, King Hansen moved their meeting so that Ari would have to spend more time there. Got him the biggest suite at The King's Rest and tickets to one of the shows just to make sure he went out. It would be rude to refuse the gifts after all.

Ari also knew it would be a chance for Lloyd to gather information on him. Lloyd was famously paranoid, and not without reason. Rumor had it he even cooked his own meals just to make sure they didn't get poisoned. The delay between Ari's arrival and their meeting would be used to assess him, find his weak spots.

Ari smirked at the idea. His stepmother had taught him how to read people, how to figure out, within minutes, if you needed to plead, argue or bribe someone to win them over. It was an education reserved for ladies of the court, to be their husband's support. Sarah understood that Ari would be much more capable in a diplomatic capacity if he had that training. Men like Lloyd thought they had power because they could spend the time and money to study their quarry. Ladies only needed a few minutes to get a read on you.

Though he'd been granted gifts due to his status, Ari was adamant to his security team that no one know who he is when he's out and about. When he's outside of the suite, he's Guy Thomas. Sure there'd been family photos of him in the media, but he's grown out his hair and beard enough that the photos barely look like him anymore. And he got along well enough with his security that they could easily pass for a group of friends on an outing.

Ari isn't looking forward to going out and about but, despite its grand size, the suite is too confining for him. He and his team head out to one of the restaurants to eat before the show he has to go to. Usually he keeps himself pretty well on alert, on the lookout for Lloyd's people, but he's suddenly distracted. In the sea of gold and black, there's a spot of bright teal that catches his eye. He wants to walk towards it but Max, head of his security team, draws him back into the group and turns him back towards the restaurant.

The show was set to start and you had no idea what it was about. For once, you didn't do your research beforehand. Then again, when the show is titled "Zombie Burlesque" you're pretty sure you get the gist of what's going to happen. You and your friends settle in, all happy chitters and drinks, eagerly awaiting the entertainment, only quieting when the lights dim, signalling the start of the show.

In one of the balconies Ari is not at all interested in the show. He's spotted the bright teal in a sea of black and red. He's trying not to be obvious about watching you and your friends, but he wants to find out more. Such an odd color choice, one that calls to him. Such lovely laughter, more real than anything he's heard since he landed in Rumica. Others in the audience are so reserved in their mannerisms but you and your friends are so openly enjoying yourselves.

Are you a plant sent to spy on him? Draw him in for Lloyd's spying purposes? Or are you something real? An oasis in the desert?

He has to know.

Ah for fem!yuu

Honestly i think it would be pretty chill on most fronts for nrc, like most of the guys are gonna act the same (with some caveats/exceptions that you've already mentioned where they show off more or just get more awkward)

Simply because all the dorms are either

A) very strict (Riddle and vil and being on top of stuff going down- like holy fuck i think any bad seeds wouldn't even try shit in those dorms but if they did they'd be so fucking done. RIP because pomefiore especially, like all three of those guys would kill... Good though like. Firm believer that the best places for fem!yuu would be pomefiore or heartslabyul tbh but that's a different post to make lol) ,

B) very on top of making sure everyone stays in line (Leona, vil and Riddle ensuring no chaos that goes beyond a certain point. I don't include malleus in this despite his dorm being devoted to rules and morals and their king-to-be because Malleus just exists and everyone kinda just upholds the rules usually without him saying anything to them. Unlike the others actively checking in and telling people to do stuff around the dorm, he's just in the dorm and people do things they need to do)

C) or they have strict security directly due to their housewardens (kalim and his food/drink safety plus keeping any suspicious behavior at bay even during rowdy conditions, malleus and his entire dorm's devotion to morals plus strict security due to royalty and also the devoted dorm vibes in general, ignihyde having the MOST cyber security plus ortho having access to it like I'm pretty sure ortho would genuinely teleport over and obliterate someone if he found someone doing something beyond NRC bickering) so fem!yuu will be pretty fine on that front though nrc is still full of petty guys that pick fights with anything that moves and Crowley will take advantage of free labor no matter the source. Equal rights and treatment but like, in the way that fem! yuu probably will still get dumped with Crowley's workload and get told to live in Ramshackle the local black mold hut

And as you said, yuu does work directly for Crowley (i think novel yuu- yuuya- actually avoids a fight because Leona points it out to his dormmates so a lot of the guys would want to avoid trouble due to the connections to the headmaster). Fem! Yuu probably also gets avoided because she does officially work for the guy in charge of the entire school.

Will say that some stuff does depend on personality and actions of fem!yuu since Leona is very much is willing to deck Yuuka in a game (wiped the floor with her and told her to get up in the manga) but also this was cause she was beating up people in his dorm at one point. (For good reason, they were picking a fight with her- i can't quite remember the reason per se beyond them saying she was being a trespasser and something else??? Investigating when she shouldn't be??? It's been a bit since i read it. all i know is that she spars with Jack, beats up some dorm members and leona stops the fight and wipes the floor with her in a game of magift)

Essentially fem!yuu safe in terms of most stuff and likely gets treated the same as everyone else that goes to NRC and also some would spar fem!yuu depending on vibes and her capabilities.

agree with all of this, and it does depend on the yuu herself, her personality and capabilities and appearance, in a way, will all effect how she's treated

I do uphold the belief that most of the housewardens, specifically leona and vil, would not tolerate any misogyny or harassment towards yuu. riddle would be equally mortified but I think would have less of an idea how to handle it, since NRC is an all-boys school and thus there are no rules or regulations about how to handle such things. so I think he'd dole out the same punishments he'd give everyone else... whereas leona and vil would arguably give even harsher ones

if briar valley is a matriarchal society, I think malleus would handle such things similarly. worse, probably, because he would be mortified and embarrassed at his underlings behavior. likewise, I think lilia would be keeping an eye on yuu, and silver and sebek would be some of the first to step in if such things happened. say what you will about sebek, but based on his devotion to the draconia lineage, which is mostly women, and his close relationship with his mother, if he caught a whiff of misogyny he would put aside the whole "magicless human" thing and step in on yuu's behalf

first and foremost, thank you all for participating in this event! it took me a hell of a long time to work on, but it was fun regardless! i decided to put this note down here just in case anyone needed a simplified version of the rules (to avoid confusion). so basically, all you need to do is submit the name of a character from either genshin or hsr (make sure they're on the list of characters i write for first), then tell me which challenge from the above list you want them to complete, and then 3 opponents (ex.: "blade + the storm + dan heng, jing yuan, kafka"). at the end of the request, i'll give a brief overview of the challenge and how it went for the characters. then i will place a poll and you guys get to vote which character survived the challenge and which did not! note: only one character can make it out of the challenge alive ;). to avoid any further confusion, the aus listed next to the challenges are the type of fics you want me to write about the character you're requesting. the actual challenge, as i said before, will be briefly mentioned at the end of your request. if there are multiple requests for one challenge, then the next challenge will be briefly overviewed at the end. •he is definetly someone who would smack some common sense into the Team. (Including you and in the worst moments too sometimes (just humble him no on is blaming you))

• let's not forget that he is brutally honest which is why your always annoyed because yes he is right but you point out that he should be more careful with the way he chooses his words, and he dosen't necessary needs to speak his mind cuz who tf ask?

• i don't think he would tell ranpo that he has no ability tbh, he get's that this is basiclly a rule but he hears ranpos and everybodys heartbeats when they say "ranpo has an ability."

•if he got an opportunity he would make some comments here and there about it (in the beginning of working there)

•however he respects him and his team mates(he did think about throwing ranpo in a train alone and see how lost he'll get but he didn't do it (yet))

•even though he likes being admired we all know he really does care for the public/ the people he works with, and is ready to protect those in need.

•if your on the train and you don't have anywhere to hold yourself onto you can hold onto his arm or he will make way so you can hold yourself from where he was holding himself (that was too much hold in one sentence but you get it)

• If your cold he will give you his jacked/scarf so you can warm up (he'll mostly scold you)

• if your a person who is highly anxious he would acually stop sacring you with his ability to show up out of nowhere or with his sassy way to be (There is also no fun in tormenting you lul)

• if you ask him about it he just says that It's because of how the Sound of your heart always beating so hard makes him have headaches and that he feels your anxious feelings and that gives him a hard time too which is true at some point because he can get overwehlmed by too much (like I said)

Jane Crocker (Homestuck) vs. Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars)

The fandom blames her for the melodrama and problems in Act 6 and shit even though it was ALL the alpha kids who were terrible communicators and having relationship drama. She encouraged Jake to try having a relationship with Dirk even though she liked him too, she wants her friends to be happy even if she isn't. The fandom basically makes her the Stupid Bitch Who Gets In The Way Of Yaoi even though she quite literally made the yaoi happen. She's a victim of Act 6 being messy and written badly. Then we get to the epilogues/sequel. While she's an adult there, it's clear the writers just kinda hate her. She could definitely be a villain but they completely misunderstand her character in order to make her flat and completely in the wrong- even though some of the things she's saying in regards to Troll and Human society intertwining. It isn't looked at with nuance, Jane is just wrong and everyone else has to kill her. Like... hello??? If you're going to make her a villain do it right. Misogyny my nemesis.

"Jane Crocker is initially introduced when, in order to win the game they have been sucked into, the original four kids travel to a universe where their grand/parents have been swapped with them and selected to play it instead.  She is the grandmother, now granddaughter of John Egbert, the first introduced character, and her hobbies include detective fiction, baking, wondering how to tell one of her best friends that she's in love with him, and avoiding frequent attempts on her life.

To explain that last one, she is the heiress to the Betty Crocker company and national monopoly, aka. Crockercorp, and has big plans about the good she can do when she finally takes power.  As she finds out in the game, the company is a front ruled by the Condesce, an alien queen from another universe who was gathering power on Earth so that she could leap into the game and thus take over the world it would create.  And she's happy to let Jane rule with her, so long as she puts on this computer and OBEYs.

After she is mind-controlled by the Condesce, Jane has little role in the rest of the story -- she is put to sleep and cured offscreen, and only shows up as a bit player in the final fight with no dialogue whatsoever to resolve her arc.  However, she does have one scene with her crush, Jake, while she is not herself that colours a lot of the audience reaction to her.  

Some context: During the game, she had chickened out during her confession to Jake, and he then proceeded to use her for relationship advice when their other friend, Dirk, succeeded in becoming his boyfriend.  After one of these chats where Jake reveals he forgot her birthday, she blows up at him for using her, which is the last normal conversation they have in the comic.

By the time she is being controlled, Jake is being held prisoner, and so with her inhibitions removed and priorities redirected towards Crockercorp, she tells him all about the future he'll have as her consort and repeatedly harasses and threatens him.  Because there is never any closure for this moment as both characters are shoved to the background, this is the fandom's last impression of Jane, which is used as evidence of her true nature whenever anyone needs to justify their hate for or demonization of her.

Although Jane has plenty of casual conversations with her friends early on that demonstrate her true character -- she is supportive of her friends to a fault, and is initially given the role of team leader but ultimately is too passive to fill it, one of the many reasons for her friends' frayed unity.  However, absolutely none of her traits and decisions are important to the plot, and her arc is dropped with her potential left unfulfilled, leaving it easy for her to be overshadowed by a single dramatic moment she had while explicitly out of character.

And that should be the end of the story, but it gets worse.  In 2019, Hussie released the Homestuck Epilogues, an explicitly ""dubiously canonical"" prose novel with two routes that many fans found so damaging and distasteful that they left the fandom entirely.  Between the book itself and the ensuing flame wars, the fandom was reduced to merely a fraction of its size, and most of the people now remaining belong to the camp that liked the Epilogues, or at least saw it as part of canon.

In both routes of the Epilogue, Jane, now an adult, becomes the authoritarian president of Earth C and coerces Jake into an abusive relationship.  This is worse in the Candy Route, where she is described as a fascist, declares a policy of genocide against trolls, regularly drugs Jake to have sex with him, and uses their kid to blackmail him into staying with her.  All of this ultimately causes her to be cast as a central antagonist in the HS team's ongoing comic ""Homestuck^2"" that continues off of the Epilogues.

All of this follows from an extrapolation of her behaviour while mind-controlled, which is somehow still applicable to her character once she is back to normal.   Now, the popular excuse for her mischaracterization is the backbone of current official Homestuck content.  And because her being an antagonist is key to the story, most fans of the sequel (which is now the majority of online Homestuck fans) have to buy into the justification for her actions in order to properly suspend disbelief and keep reading.  Thus, it is nigh impossible to find anyone who will engage with the canon -- and I mean /actually/ canon, not postcanon -- version of Jane.

Addendum: Although canon Jane is a teenager, I have to discuss how her adult postcanon self affects her perception and basically erases the original character.  Nonetheless, since postcanon Jane can hardly be called the same character, I don't think this affects Jane's eligibility."

Hello! I am so excited to be hosting a Prince of Sin Week this year. The goal is to get more content on the Princes and to celebrate the next book coming out in October! @afandomangel is running the account but I want to shout out @litnerdwrites and @cadiawrites for all of the support and great ideas. The encouragement to have this be a larger event has really helped!

Shoutout to @litnerdwrites for this idea to have both prompts for each day and a prince for each day that creators can choose from! We need your help for the second option of each day. For each day creators can choose to either write for that Prince and/or use the prompt. i.e. for 07/08 you can choose to create something for Pride, use the prompt to make something for Pride, or chose a different Prince and use the prompt for 07/08.

07/07 Day 1: Prince Wrath/All Is Fair In Love and War

Featuring Prince Wrath’s sin, Wrath is the demon general of war and is a fierce warrior and strategist. "Acta non verba," meaning "actions, not words," is Wrath’s motto, and he lives by it. And don’t forget that “anger is his own personal aphrodisiac.” 😏

07/08 Day 2: Prince Pride/ Reflections and Ego

“I don’t simply look pretty. I am dashing.” Day two will feature Prince Pride. He loves to feed his ego and leads many to believe he is debauched, a drunkard, and a rake, but it is all an act. Though he does play the role so well that sometimes it doesn’t look like an act, leading to some of his struggles with those he cares for.In Emelia’s description of his throne room, it is described to have ornate mirrors everywhere to allow him to gaze upon himself whenever he likes. And as we learned from one of the other princes (Envy) the mirrors may not always be used just for his own reflection.😉

07/09 Day 3: Prince Envy/Games and RIddles

Prince Envy, oh Prince Envy, our prince loves a good game just as much as he loves to invoke his namesake sin in others. He often plays games with others, some dangerous enough to threaten his court. He is very cunning and ruthless, and he is not above trickery.  He is quite envious (hence his sin) and is a tad possessive as we saw in Throne of the Fallen with Camilla. 

07/10 Day 4: Prince Greed/All Bets Are Off

Prince Greed, like his brothers, enjoys games and tricks. He rules over his own gaming hell and enjoys placing wagers. He is also very calculating and ruthless, and Emelia describes him during an encounter as having a possessive hunger in his gaze. With his namesake sin, he is very greedy and can never get enough of things, power being one of them.  

07/11 Day 5: Prince Gluttony/Champagne Fountains

“He was a rake through and through. And he seemed adored for it.” Prince Gluttony overindulges in the things he enjoys: food, alcohol, debauchery, and hosting jaw-dropping parties to shock others, including the Reporter (Can’t wait for Throne of Secrets).  Gluttony is very suggestive and is often occupied in the selfish matters of his sin. Someone mentioned in the suggestions for prompts that he spends a lot of time with his partner. Our prince most likely does overindulge when it comes to his partner, time, gifts, food, attention, etc. 

07/12 Day 6: Prince Sloth/For Research

Like Gluttony, Sloth is often preoccupied in selfish matters of his sin. But unlike his brothers, he prefers to lounge around and read rather than engage in debauchery. He wears a mask of being a bashful, lazy book lover but he is also a very lethal warrior wielding a powerful weapon of his mind. He is very calculating and does not miss a detail. He takes his time studying until he has formulated a conclusion and course of action.  Sloth is very guarded and wary of others and often investigates others wanting to know everything about them from birth to the present day, including all potential lovers.  As for relationships Sloth has only had a few serious relationships and none have ended with tragedy or heartbreak. Sloth tries to avoid drama. 

07/13 Day 7: Prince Lust/Lover

The final day will feature Prince Lust’s sin. The Prince of Lust is known for toying with a person’s happiness and their carnal urges. He is quite the gossip and is very cunning. The prince is also a secret romantic despite his love for debauchery. Him being needy and romantic were a common suggestion for the prompts for Prince Lust.

Want to say this outloud so that the rest of the tag+comunity knows it and knows it well: not all the Lily Orchard-critical blogs and people HAVE to be buddy-buds with each other. It's always nice to have unity and no-infighting but you need to understand we are all adults talking about how we and other people have been hurt/set-upon by her base, or even preyed on by Lily herself.

So, you want to make a TTRPG…

I made a post a long while back about what advice you would give to new designers. My opinions have changed somewhat on what I think beginners should start with (I originally talked about probability) but I thought it might be useful to provide some resources for designers, new and established, that I've come across or been told about. Any additions to these in reblogs are much appreciated!

This is going to be a long post, so I'll continue beneath the cut.

SRDs

So, you have an idea for a type of game you want to play, and you've decided you want to make it yourself. Fantastic! The problem is, you're not sure where to start. That's where System Reference Documents (SRDs) can come in handy. There are a lot of games out there, and a lot of mechanical systems designed for those games. Using one of these as a basis can massively accelerate and smooth the process of designing your game. I came across a database of a bunch of SRDs (including the licenses you should adhere to when using them) a while back, I think from someone mentioning it on Tumblr or Discord.

Probability

So, you have a basic system but want to tweak it to work better with the vision you have for the game. If you're using dice, this is where you might want to consider probability. Not every game needs this step, but it's worth checking that the numbers tell the story you're trying to tell with your game. For this, I'll link the site I did in that first post, AnyDice. It allows you to do a lot of mathematical calculations using dice, and see the probability distribution that results for each. There's documentation that explains how to use it, though it does take practice.

Playtesting

So you've written the rules of your game and want to playtest it but can't convince any of your friends to give it a try. Enter Quest Check. Quest Check is a website created by Trekiros for connecting potential playtesters to designers. I can't speak to how effective it is (I've yet to use it myself) but it's great that a resource like it exists. There's a video he made about the site, and the site can be found here:

Graphic Design and Art

Game is written and tested? You can publish it as-is, or you can make it look cool with graphics and design. This is by no means an essential step, but is useful if you want to get eyes on it. I've got a few links for this. First off, design principles:

Secondly, art. I would encourage budding designers to avoid AI imagery. You'll be surprised how good you can make your game look with only shapes and lines, even if you aren't confident in your own artistic ability. As another option, public domain art is plentiful, and is fairly easy to find! I've compiled a few links to compilations of public domain art sources here (be sure to check the filters to ensure it's public domain):

You can also make use of free stock image sites like Pexels or Pixabay (Pixabay can filter by vector graphics, but has recently become much more clogged with AI imagery, though you can filter out most of it, providing it's tagged correctly).

Fonts

Turns out I've collected a lot of resources. When publishing, it's important to bear in mind what you use has to be licensed for commercial use if you plan to sell your game. One place this can slip through is fonts. Enter, my saviour (and eternal time sink), Google Fonts. The Open Font License (OFL) has minimal restrictions for what you can do with it, and most fonts here are available under it:

So, game is designed, written, and formatted. Publishing time! There are two places that I go to to publish my work: itch.io and DriveThruRPG. For beginners I would recommend itch - there's less hoops to jump through and you take a much better cut of what you sell your games for, but DriveThruRPG has its own merits (@theresattrpgforthat made great posts here and here for discovering games on each). Itch in particular has regular game jams to take part in to inspire new games. I'll link both sites:

Character Profile [Part One]

A/n: This is based on @thesingularityseries Mortal Kombat OC Ask Game. I apologize for tagging you, hun, but you deserve the recognition. Please check out her blog. She has some amazing content, including detailed information about her OCs.

I decided to break this profile (I'm calling it) into sections to avoid such a mess of thoughts. Normally, I don't go so in-depth with an OC unless asked, but Ava is special to me.

Factions and Alliances: 

What faction is your OC aligned with? Why?

Formerly The Lin Kuei, but now the Shirai Ryu. Ava is technically aligned with Liu Kang as an Earthrealm protector, but since her magic suited the Lin Kuei in a few ways, she only trained a month at the Wu Shi Academy before she was pawned off to Bi-Han where her training continued. 

What is their role - either in their faction or in the overall events of MK?

In addition to being an Earthrealm protector, she is utilized for her unique abilities. As a character role, she plays the Lover, a character whose decisions and actions are determined and guided by her heart. 

What are their thoughts on their faction? Do they enjoy being there? Do they want to leave?

Ava did not think much of being a protector when it was suggested to her; she laughed it off as a joke but soon learned the severity of the role. A part of the reason she decided to follow Liu Kang was because she was simply bored. It was not until her realm was jeopardized that she decided to take up the mantle. When it came to joining the Lin Kuei, she was less than enthusiastic. It was a hard transition for her based on her life before being approached by Liu Kang; different cultures and rules. It took her some time to adjust, but she eventually embraced it.

While she did not leave behind her role as a protector, she did abandon the Lin Kuei because her views did not align with Bi-Hans, however, due to her mixed emotions toward him, she often struggles with accepting whether or not she made the right decision. 

What are their relationships like? Do they have any friends within their faction? What about rivals? Mentors?

Naturally, a cheerful and social woman, she makes friends quickly. Her first close friend is Johnny Cage. She likes his movies, having never seen them before due to her strict upbringing, and finds his puns and references humorous, making a few of her own within the group.

When with the Lin Kuei, she is closer to Tomas Vrbada, though she gets along well with Kuai Liang and Frost. She has no known rival, though she tries to one up her avowed Grandmaster whenever she gets the chance to save herself a moment of scrutiny under his wing. He brings out the worst in her. 

How do they feel about other factions? Do they have any enemies?

Any enemy of Earthrealm is an enemy of hers. Though she never wanted to, when she abandoned the Lin Kuei, she made an enemy of the assassins. Her only saving grace is whatever is left of the bond she and Bi-Han share.

Origins:

What realm do they originate from?

Earthrealm. Ava is from Nashville, Tennessee.

What species/race are they?

She is half human, half Seidan. 

What timeline does your OC originate from?

The current timeline. 

What do they fight for? Why?

Her motives are selfish compared to some of the others she stands beside - though not as selfish as Johnny's reasons for fighting - mostly a need to cure her boredom and make something of herself, but she also wants to learn where her inherited ability came from.

Describe their childhood. What events led them to where they are now? (Brief Summary)

Born to Lee and Brielle Ashford in the Music City, Ava had a loving but strict childhood. Her dad was a truck driver, so her mother raised her mostly alone, an authoritarian parent who, despite her upbringing, could not break the cycle. She motivated Ava to pursue a number of activities, such as gymnastics and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, but one hobby she absolutely loved and adopted on her own was singing, having an impressively high vocal range for a child that opened the door to many musical opportunities for her, much to her mother's dismay. That came to a sudden stop, however, when she ruptured the ear drums of several audience members during a school musical. Though she was not reprimanded for her actions, her mother insisted that she abandon the endeavor, to which she reluctantly did.

When she got older, she taught herself to control her range, though it was obvious something was different about her vocal cords when compared to others. She worked numerous random jobs that felt mediocre until she became a freelance singer, bouncing from various events to bars in her hometown where she was then approached by Liu Kang.

Pokémon Legends Arceus is one of my favorite Pokémon titles.

While it is for the majority of people, lots of them tend to just say ‘oh it felt like Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and I liked that’ and leave it at that. So imma ramble about some of my favorite things about Legends Arceus, as well as how I feel like Legends ZA will compare.

Starting off simple: The Artstyle

As opposed to the cartoony style most Pokémon games will go for, PLA uses a lot more realistic style for its setting. There isn’t a ton of bright flashy colors to draw the players in, and it feels more mature for some reason.

The Movements/Playing style

In the majority of Pokémon games, the player has to rely on ride Pokémon or transport to get around faster, yet PLA makes the player feel like they can move at a relatively comfortable pace without help. Running feels like running. Walking and jogging seem standard; and fun movement like the combat roll add to the fun of moving around even if there isn’t a jump button. You don’t require a bike or roller blades or even Pokémon to move well.

While PLA gives you ride Pokémon to use, the majority of the game practically lets you go without using them. Most areas (as expected because humans would’ve had to reach there) have easy paths to reach locations. You don’t feel anchored to either going too fast or feeling like you need something to go a normal pace, plus you start out with these mechanics. So the game never feels slow unless it is important.

Wild Pokémon

While it’s become the most common aspect of 3D Pokémon games, PLA enhances this to the next level that the generation versions of the games can’t compare to.

Not only does it aid in the setting (on how Pokémon rule the world, or atleast live side by side alongside humans), but it adds mechanics and reasoning element to the game. The mechanics being 1. Avoid getting killed, 2. Catch Pokémon without battle (so far the only game to do that), 3. Pokémon can be either hostile, scared, or friendly, 4. Able to choose which Pokémon to catch (referring to typical grass in standard generation Pokémon games).

The reasoning element comes in the form of the fact that Pokémon are regarded as dangerous and can actually cause serious harm to the player. Running straight into battle could kill you if you aren’t careful and in turn, you have to hide from dangerous Pokémon. Pokémon are no longer the typical ‘things in the forest we befriend’, they are now hunters in a world where humans are possible prey.

It just builds its own reputation and system that can’t be matched to games like Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet where Pokémon can be extremely dangerous.. yet you can just move past them. PLA gives the player both a hiding system and a targeted system, in which the Pokémon can attack you directly without resorting to battles. It feels more wild and more natural. As no Pokémon would wait to battle an equal if a human stepped in their territory, they would instead just use a flamethrower or rock slide to attack the human.

Lack of loading time

PLA is formatted in a very unique way. To start off, PLA focuses on a single region and splits it into 7 parts, including Cogita’s area and Jubilife Village. This means that there is only at max 7 major loading zones required to travel around the game, leaving you free to explore without issue. Meaning, very little of the players time is wasted by sitting and staring at a loading screen so they can explore. Similar to games like AHIT or Bugsnax: the majority of your area is free to roam. Paired with the movement, the player feels like they are properly exploring an area, not just playing a game. It’s almost immersive in a sense. I can spend a while in a single area without having to return or feel as though my progress is stumped.

The Story (And Characters)

While PLA wasn’t as loved as BW/B2W2 was for its story, it still held up extremely well. Not only by targeting a very popular source of nostalgia in the form of the Sinnoh games, but by solving practically everything it had to offer in the span of the game itself. Games such as Scar/Vio and Sw/Sh often left the players missing spots in the story or offered too much to the point of disconnect. PLA keeps you on track with a basic plot premise, (quell the nobles, catch some Pokémon, build a rank, fight god) and still kept what people loved about the Sinnoh games. The storyline keeps you on track, but gives you the freedom necessary to enjoy the game. Similar to how Bugsnax gives you an overarching quest and a side quests, yet you can take all the time in the world to complete if you wish, minimal barriers to stop you.

Now.. the characters. PLA introduced a new type of character the games can use: ancestors. A large majority of the characters are related to previously known gym leaders or prominent figures in the story lines of past games. This only enhances the nostalgia and it shows a connection between the past Hisui and the future Sinnoh. While they are ancestors, they are still unique in their own right and create a fun idea for the players to mess around with outside of the games. Sure, not many of the characters personalities stuck with me like other games, but they were still full of life and their own story.

PLA also skipped out on a major thing within the Pokémon genre during this game, being trainers. There is very little trainers, and the player ends up being one of the very few to even catch more than two Pokémon. Not only does this add to the setting (that Pokémon are dangerous and hard to defend), but it also builds on the story of the player being the chosen one.

Battle Gimmick

In PLA, instead of a previously known gimmick or style of battle being implemented, it creates its own: battle styles in the form of Agile/Strong style moves. These never favor any specific Pokémon (such as Z-Moves, Gigantimax, Megas, or Tera giving certain Pokémon special versions/forms), work in all battles, are used by opposing Pokémon, and make sense. It makes the game very even, and avoids making specific battles feel like cheats cause of a single gimmick.

Now, for my ultimate reason it’s one of my favorites…

Pokédex completion.

This is one of the first, maybe the only, Pokémon game where you can complete the dex without assistance. Trade Pokémon simply evolve via item, no need to go online and trade with a friend or pray that a stranger is nice enough to send one that will evolve. There is no version exclusives. No need to get another game version and switch over, no need to find someone else who has the other game, no need to search desperately for trade codes… you just search and eventually you can find the Pokémon you need.

This was the first game where I was excited to complete the dex. Not only did I end up doing it (albeit I got a full entry of 10 for every Pokémon before I realized you just require catching it), but I wasn’t ever upset at its in game implications either. Consider what the Pokédex is, a detailed description and catching list for each and every Pokémon that can be caught within the region. For almost every other game, Pokémon you can’t catch in that region are shown in the dex, leaving you unable to complete it even when that Pokémon just does not exist in that region (for the version). It makes no sense. It’s like America making a list of all the animals that originate from America, and adding the Kangaroo. Sure we have some.. but I can bet right now it doesn’t originate from here.

The dex completion is easy, and while some Pokémon have to be caught during space-time distortions; it creates a RNG gimmick in the game that isn’t difficult to trigger and understand or even wait for. Plus, I found many shinies before I ever got the shiny charm- so it wasn’t even that necessary.

Regardless.. I love Legends Arceus so much and I really hope Legends Z-A meets a sort of standard..

I'm big into organizing and listing things, and I really like thinking about all the possibilities of fictional relationships - my goal here is to share my thoughts about and analyze ships from the media I'm into. Don't expect constant or frequent posts, as I am a very very busy college student, but I'll try my best to post whenever I can :)

Q. Can I be an admin on this blog? A. Uhhh I just plan this to be my blog, so at the moment I am not interested in recruiting admins. Thank you for the interest though!

Q. Are you a Proshipper? A. I mean, I do believe in not harassing people for their fictional preferences, so I guess??

Q. What is the purpose of this blog? A. It makes me sad to see how negative fandom has become. Everyone focuses on the things they hate and instead of focusing on the things they love, people tend to spread hate and turn on each other for no reason. I just wanted to shed some light on ships that are either under explored, overshadowed, forgotten or have their tags filled with hate posts. I hate feeling like I'm alone in fandom spaces and I don't want people to feel that way either.

Q. Is Togekiss your favorite Pokémon? A. It's one of my favorites, yeah :)
